Greenbrier County Volunteer Sheltering/Housing Guide

Overview:

Sheltering and/or housing for volunteers coming to Greenbrier County to assist flood victims varies by day and by location.  The following summarizes the shelter/housing availability as of July 4th.  We are continuing to seek out additional shelter/housing availability.  As the inventory changes, this information will be updated.

Hotels:

We are not aware of any hotel availability in White Sulphur Springs, Rupert, or Rainelle.  There may be room availability in Covington (just over the Virginia/West Virginia state line; 20 minutes from White Sulphur Springs), Beckley WV (50 minutes from Lewisburg), and Summersville WV (45 minutes from Rainelle over some damaged roads).   Please go to the hotel websites or any of the reservation consolidators (TripAdvisor, Priceline, etc.) for availability and rates.

Lewisburg.  Lewisburg is centrally located to the damaged areas (10 minutes to White Sulphur Springs, 20 minutes to Rupert, 30+ minutes to Rainelle).  There are a number of restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the Lewisburg hotels (listed below).

Dawson Inn.  A small, clean, family run hotel at I-64 exit 150.  Adjacent to an Exxon station and a grill.  Approximately 30 minutes from Rainelle.  Rates run from $70-130.  304.392.6661; http://dawsoninn.com

Camps:

Some program camps will have availaibilty when they don't have sessions on their calendars.

Greenbrier County Youth Camp, Frankford, WV 24938.  http://www.greenbrieryouthcamp.com/.  304-497-2164.  4 lodges complete with showers, bathrooms, etc.
265 Beds. Meals can be arranged. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by adult. Plenty of waterand ice on-site.  

Churches:

Churches throughout the area have been sheltering flood victims and/or volunteers.  Of late, as victims have been moved out of shelters in to other housing solutions those churches have moved to sheltering volunteers from their parent denominations/relief organizations.  All have expressed a willingness to support other volunteers/volunteer groups.

Bascom Methodist Church.  108 Church St, Rupert WV 25984.  304.646.9597. Limited capacity inside the church, willing to host campers/tent camping.  Pastor Jonathan Dierdorf (304.444.3874; jonathanwvumc@gmail.com)

Big Clear Creek Baptist Church.  503 Church St, Rupert WV 25984.  Limited capacity inside the church, willing to host campers/tent camping.  Pastor Glen Kuhn, 304.392.6626; 304.923.4480; glen.wv@gmail.com.

Sewell Valley Baptist Church.  1444 James River & Kanawha Turnpike, Rainelle WV, 25962.  Can accommodate 25 volunteers inside the church, has a kitchen, tent camping on the soccer field.  David Gutshall 304.438.5633

 

Sheltering:

Self-contained (or nearly self-contained), willing to work out of your camper, RV, or pitch a tent.  The following locations may be right for you or your group.

Summerwind Campground, 2600 Lawn Rd, Meadow Bridge, WV 25976.  Just off of I-64 at exit 150.  Trailer/RV hookups starting at $26/day; tent camping $23-26/day. Dump station / shower room.  Gas / food 1/2 mile Dawson Country Store @ Exit 150 / I-64. 540.520.9935.

Greenbrier State Forest.  1541 Hart’s Run Rd, Caldwell WV, 24925. Very close to White Sulphur Springs and Caldwell, 10 minutes to Lewisburg.  Cabins, campsites with electrical hookups, tent camping.  Good availability this week due to cancellation of the Greenbrier Classic.  Future weeks TBD.  Mention that you’re a volunteer for discounted rates.  304.536.1944, or go to http://www.greenbriersf.com.

Western Greenbrier High School, Main St, Charmco WV, 25958.  At the intersection of US 60 and WV 20, midway between Rainelle and Rupert.  The National Guard’s established a shelter camp for flood victims and/or volunteers.  Ten air-conditioned shelters (10 people per shelter); men’s and women’s shower tents; laundry units.  No cost. 304.438.6191.

Eastern Greenbrier High School, One Spartan Lane, Lewisburg WV 24901.  Just announced, opening Wednesday, July 6th.  No other information available at this time.  304.647.6464.

Other Services/Associated “Points of Light”

Wellspring of Greenbrier, WV.  524 Nicholas St, Rupert WV, 25984.  Ministry-based outreach program providing services to the homeless, the disadvantaged, and transient Greenbrier County visitors.  Showers, washers/dryers, meals (all no cost).  Fred and Scarlett Kellerman.  304.392.2095; www.wellspringofgreenbrier.com/
